Back story –

Working in a job where you often find yourself surrounded by a lot of negative thinking, I sometimes got caught up in it losing sight of the good things in my life. This type of thinking was infectious and it was hard to break the cycle of negativity.

About the book –

Hugh Van Cuylenberg was a high school teacher who understood the affects of mental illness from an early age when his younger sister was diagnosed with an eating disorder. This is what drove him to understand what exactly makes people happy in life.

Throughout his life and in his studies, he found that the 3 most important practices for happiness were gratitude, mindfulness and empathy. He then developed a program that was utilised and highly regarded by schools, businesses and professional sporting teams around the country to implement the lessons he had learned to becoming a happier person.

What I learned –

By practicing gratitude in the form of journaling, I have found myself being less focused on the negativity that can come about in my life and more focused on the small things that are often taken for granted.

Also, consciously practicing empathy through being compassionate to those around me has helped to create a less negative environment and in turn, helped me to become a happier person overall
