Mindfulness for Warriors – Kim Colegrove

Mindfulness for Warriors by Kim Colegrove

Background story -

MFW was written by the widow of a 30 year veteran of law enforcement who died by self inflicted gunshot. Less than 2 years later her nephew did the same, unable to overcome the loss. These drove her to dedicate her life to suicide prevention of all military and first responders (inc. the oft forgotten nurses) using meditation as a medium.

Books guidance and advice -

The first half of the book is part interview of battle hardened warriors sharing their own stories and those of lost colleagues/spouses, while the second half is some short techniques those on the frontline can use.

One of the great juxtapositions of life is the stoic resonate toward dangerous jobs, but are too stoic to talk about the effect these have on them until it’s too late.

Result or application -

I picked this up due to my combined interests in tactical populations and meditation. I did not know until I started it was a suicide prevention book.

My interest in meditation came from martial arts 20 years ago but I didn’t begin practising until a few years back. If you think mediation is soft, samurai would meditate for hours before beheading the enemy.

Highly recommend this for all military and first responders, as well as their families. Anything that saves one life is a good thing
